Why Does MicroDermabrasion Cause My Skin to Break Out?

The most common side effect of microdermabrasion is an Acne breakout within the first few days after treatment.

Microdermabrasion is a superficial mechanical peel of the stratum corneum, (or the outer layer of dead, dry skin cells). Microderm exfoliates the surface layers, exposing the underlying, more hydrated layer of skin. The good news is that light reflecting off the more hydrated layers gives your face a certain “glow”. The bad news is that microderm temporarily compromises the stratum corneum, leaving it slightly more susceptible to p. acne infection. The side effect of a breakout is the result of p. acne bacterial infection via the compromised stratum corneum. Your stratum corneum is an amazing design. It’s like a flexible suit of armor that protects you against not only p. acne, but a myriad of environmental contaminants. As we age the stratum corneum becomes less compact, less hydrated, and less effective. A series of 6 or more microdermabrasion sessions is clinically proven to improve the health and effectiveness of the stratum corneum, making it more compact, and more hydrated. So you’re doing the right thing if you’re having microderm treatments. The key is proper post care to avoid the side effect of an Acne breakout.

We recommend infusion of a lipid repair serum (containing sphingolipids) after DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion using the HydroWands. Also, topical application of a Vitamin C serum immediately post treatment, and then morning and evening for the first week. Vitamin C is a natural anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial that will help protect the skin during the first few days of recovery from microderm. The best Vitamin C we’ve found, especially for use immediately post microderm is “Pro-C” from A-Cute Derm, Inc. Houston TX. It has a high pH due to alcohol suspension (so it generally does not burn, even on sensitive skin types). The alcohol also enhances penetration. We also recommend A-Cute Derm’s Pro-C Antioxidant Cleansing Gel for daily use, (whether your doing microderm or not).

Many dermatologist find that after switching from traditional crystal microdermabrasion to DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasion, incidence of Acne breakouts are significantly reduced. Clean DiamondTome microderm does not leave crystal particles embedded in the skin, thus eliminating one of the factors suspected in prolonging the weakening of the statum corneum. And DiamondTome practitioners are trained by Mountain Coast Distributors in the prevention of Acne breakouts.

Now the best news of all! A series of DiamondTome diamond microdermabrasoins will improve the function and protection provided by your stratum corneum, and make your skin look fabulous all the while! But like so many other treatments, improvement first requires a “breaking down”, or mild, controlled injury to the treated area, (so the body will respond by building a stronger defense mechanism). Just be sure to take care with your Vitamin C, sun block, (SPF 20 or higher) and try not to touch your face too much!
